I’m a robin in an Ohio copy shop. A customer came in today, a man in his late 50s to mid 60s, to get “a couple” (his words) emails printed off. I told him we cannot access his personal email for privacy reasons, but if he can use his smartphone, he can forward the emails to our store email and we can print them from there.

After an almost-expected blank stare he replied, “I got gmail, but I don’t know how to forward emails.” After a quick crash course in basic email functions, and giving him a business card with our address on it, he wandered off, out the door to, I assumed, forward his emails in private.

A little while passed, maybe 30-45 minutes, and he returned, asking if we had received his emails. I checked, nothing yet. I then asked if he made sure that he used a Zero and not the letter “o” in our email address, which happens, rarely, but it happens, and it seems to let people re-check their work without much embarrassment. He said he’d try again.

A few moments pass and I’m in another section of my area with another customer when our cashier comes over and elbows me, “Hey, you’ve been working with that guy with his phone out for a while, hmm? He just came over and bought [some snacks] and mentioned he didn’t know that ‘o’ and zero were different things.”

I was astonished. Long story short, we soon received around 34 emails in quick succession which I printed, and a few photo attachments, and he said now that he had the practice, he’d be back for more! Joy!

Before I get into it, I know, I know… a square is a rectangle. Those of us who took any form of geometry have that phrase drilled into our minds: “All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are square.” This is about photography.

I work as a copy shop. All too often, I have customers who come in with photographs taken on old “brownie” cameras, the 3x3 square photographs and they want to put them into a modern 8x10 frame. When I explain to them how the photograph will need to be cropped to fit such a frame I’m often met with stares of incredulity. As if I had told them I’d have to take that memory from them and chuck it in a chipper.

Recently, someone on Pinterest has posted instructions for how to get a photo printed for damn cheap on our largest Engineering Drawing printer. This is great for business, however it’s bringing in customers who are interested in the ‘chic for cheap’ thing and they “just want it done [their] damn way, because [they] read it on Pinterest, it must be so!”

Examples time. A photograph that is a square (or an oval, or has been cut out because someone was once in the photo who is no longer a loved one, whatever).

Seriously cute 3x3 square photo, customer wants it as a 4x6. I explain I will have to crop the photo or else there will be white space at the top and bottom of their photo. *blank stare*

Still super cute, just different proportions. (Also note that these layouts use the rule of thirds in their subject placement, which makes the image interesting to look at, and less portrait. The original did this as well.)

I never realized how many people are not mentally visual until I worked here as well. Some folks just CANNOT imagine what a cropped photo would look like, and cannot imagine how their image would look blown up to 3x4 feet until they actually see it. My favorites are the ones who say “I want it as big as you can make it!” I whip out a 3x4 footer and they unappreciatively say “Oh that’s much too big…” :(

This is why so many people feel alone with their problems: because mental illnesses are stigmatized, people with them feel the need to put on a front for a variety of reasons (fear of that stigma, not wanting to make others worry, etc.), which makes them convince themselves they’re okay, which makes everyone think everyone else is okay. It’s not right and it prevents so many from thinking their problems are legitimate. This prevents people from seeking the help they need and is the reason suicide is the second highest cause of death among adolescents. We ALL need to play our part in breaking the silence surrounding mental health issues by opening our ears to those who need to be listened to and by doing whatever it is we need to heal our own selves.
